Work Diary Shoot 4

In todays shoot I went out with the intention of focusing on reflecting evidence through tracks and growth in my images. I was very successful and was able to find many examples of tracks from people and cars. I was able to find more examples of evidence in graffiti and litter during the shoot.

I chose this image because it shows evidence of tracks. The image uses a contrast of black and white in the image in order to make the image more striking. We can see that the water on the form shows that a person had previously walked in from the rain and under shelter. The light being shone across the surface of the floor creates the effect of form, by enhancing the shadows. By enhancing the shadows, the detail of the texture is enhanced. The black and white filter helps to enhance some of the detail within the image as well as the contrast among other formal elements.

I chose this image because it shows an example of evidence in the form of a tire track. This image shows how a car has drove through the wet mud and has created a pattern in the dirt. The texture of the mud is emphasised in a way that allows audiences to realise that the tracks have come from a tire. Another formal element featured within this image is contrast. The colour of the green grass acts in contrast with the colour of the mud. This shows further elements that the grass has been drove over by a car, causing the contrast to appear.

Progression:

In my other shoots I would like to focus on one topic. I would like to explore evidence in nature and growth. I believe I could show this through a focus on plantlife and contrasts or urban areas and nature.

Evidence Definition

Definition:

-the available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid
-be or show evidence of

Describing Words:

show,  reveal, display, indicate, witness, exhibit, manifest, testify

This example of evidence shows the camera focus on the detail of a bullet casing. The blurred background pulls the audiences full attention to the back of the casing. From this the audience can notice an indentation in the centre. This allows audience to deduce that the mark was made by the firing pin striking the back of the casing, resulting in a shot being fired. From this simple image the audience is able to notice that a gun had previously been fired before the picture was taken.

This picture features an empty car with two bullet holes in the window. This example of evidence allows audiences to piece together a story of the events that had previously occurred. It is clear that someone from the outside of the car had fired to shots at the driver. The vacant seat implies that the driver of the car had been killed as a result the two gunshots. This example of evidence shows the way in which a picture can be presented to tell a story.

This example of evidence shows the cause and result of a crime. The picture highlights an arm wielding a knife. Blood stains are spattered on the floor and on the victim. The person holding the knife appears to be dead. From this we can gather that a knife fight had been the cause of the victims death due to the cuts on the victims arm. The lack of blood on the blade suggests that the knife was used for defines but was unable to prevent the attacker.

This example of evidence shows used cigarettes on top of an object. This shows the audience that multiple people have previously been smoking in the area. The scorch marks and discolouration of the surface suggests that the people have been using the area to smoke and discard their cigarettes over a large amount of time.

Real example: Fingerprints or track marks

Personal definition:

Physical or verbal proof of an event taking place

Image Bank

These images show crimes after they have been committed. They feature murder weapons and the effect that they have. The photographers have shown this through the use of blood and bullet holes.

These two images show detailed photographs of smaller examples of evidence. We can see examples of fingerprints on a surface and on the back of the bullet casing that can be used as evidence to use to show that the person has been at the scene of the crime.

These two images show examples of human interaction. The use of burnt out cigarettes and and phone off the hook show that some one has previously used these objects.

These two images show evidence of people. They show this through the use of footprints in the sand. They are able to use texture and form to show the 3D shape of the foot.

These three images show examples of growth and time passing across different themes. We can see pattern being used in these images and you can see the subject progressively age across the image.

This image shows evidence of growth. The photographer has taken the same picture over the course of many years to show each person in the photo ageing.

These two images depict a crime scene. As a result it becomes clear that a crime has been committed in the location. A chalk line is used to show that a dead body had previously been there.

These three images all use bandages in order to show injury. Dark tones have been used in each image in order to reflect the serious tone of the subject.

These images all show evidence within different themes. Examples include, evidence of growth, ageing, human presence, injury and crime. The idea is to show the aftermath of an event in a way that allows the image to tell a visual story of events that had previously occurred. The formal elements can be incorporated into the genre of evidence. These elements include contrast in colour, the tone of a persons face or an object or repetition in growth. The theme of a crime scene is a common example of evidence in photography. Blood splatter, bullet casings and knives can all be evidence of a murder taking place. Foot and fingerprints can also be used to show a person who had previously been in the area.

Shoot 3 Work Diary

Today I went out with the intention of shooting different genres of evidence such as graffiti and vandalism as my last shoot was lacking within this are. I was able to achieve my goal and searched all around for examples of graffiti within the environment. I also wanted to incorporate more formal elements within my images. I chose to focus my images on formal elements such as texture, contrast and pattern. I was successful in incorporating these themes into the images.

This image shows an example of evidence with graffiti. I decided to take advantage of the focus in order to exaggerate the detail of the photo to show the texture of the railing while blurring out the background. The white background acts in contrast with the black writing in order to create a striking image.  Another formal element that is apparent within this image is texture. The light being shone across the railing causes the texture of the bar to be revealed. The texture of the paint appears to be bumpy as a result.

This image shows another example of evidence with graffiti.  This image features two main formal elements, pattern, lines and contrast. The lines of the metal door appear to form together in a pattern formation. The black, matte writing of the spray paint clashes with the metallic surface of the door. This creates a contrast which causes the message to stand out against the door. The texture of the surface can also be seen. The rust is present on the door which implies that the door has been there for a while and has been rained on in the past.

Progression:

For my next shoot I would like to continue to explore the uses of formal elements within my images. I would like to explore more elements such as colour, tone and depth. I would like to photograph other examples of evidence. For my next shoot I would like to photograph tracks in order to show evidence of people and cars being there.
