Shoot 10 Work Diary

I wanted to attempt to capture movement in a different way from my last shoot. I wanted to use multiple flash photography in order to capture a more visually interesting range of movement. I came across some issues with images being too bright or too dark but after experimenting with different examples of movement I was able to create some interesting examples.

This image shows a range of movement in a way that flows more naturally than static images would show. The black and white contrast allow for the image to be more noticeable in order to direct audiences attention to the movement of the person. The image is also able to depict how fast the person was travelling depending on the severity of the motion blur. Tone is used within this image in order to show journey. The person begins with a bright colour and begins to slowly grow darker and darker, the further he goes.

This image shows movement in a simple form. Three simple, static images are used to show the range of movement. This image focuses on the movement of an object as opposed to a person and is made more interesting by using the same person multiple times within the same image. The use of black and white highlight the contrasts within the image. The contrasts are used to highlight the person and their range of movements.

Progression:

If I were to do this shoot again I would like to experiment with different shutter speeds, lighting and backgrounds in order to create more varying styles of image. I would also look to create a more consistent image by adjusting the brightness and lights of the image in order to capture a better quality of image.

Shoot 9 Work Diary

I attempted to use photomontage in a way that allowed me to accurately depict the movement of objects and people in a single image. I looked at photomontage on different scales with people in large environments to objects with on a desktop. Since I wanted the image to show evidence of movement I made sure that the image showed a natural range of movements to show progression of the subject.

This image shows the movement of a person in a large environment. I wanted to incorporate objects within the surrounding environment in a way that added to the journey of the movement. As a result we can see the person sitting, walking and interacting with objects along the way to her destination. A black and white filter is used in order to add tone to the image. I used the tone as a part of the progression. Initially the person starts in a dark lit environment but as she ventures on her surroundings become more brighter as she reaches the end of her destination.

This image shows photo joiner on a smaller scale in order to replicate the movement of a bottle that has just fallen over. I used the label of the bottle to give the effect that the bottle was rolling. I was able to make the photo joiner more convincing by including a black and white filter which helped to create distance between each bottle. Depth has been used within this image through the use of the bottles. The audience can see how the size and shape of the bottles begin to slowly change the further that the bottle gets away.

Progression:

For my next shoot I would like to further explore the theme of evidence in movement in a different way. I would like to experiment with the use of light and different ranges of shutter speed to show movement in a more visually interesting way.

Work Diary Shoot 8

Today I used the studio to shoot some more portraits of a number of people. I would later use the portraits and edit them in photoshop. I was able to give the people cuts and bruises across their face as a result in an effort to show evidence of injury. I wanted to experiment by showing different examples of injury and different composition.

I decided to use this image because of the way the lighting and composition are used to show injury. I was able to use the light against the dark background in a way that emphasised the injures on the face. The bright light on the face really bring out the colour of the bruising in a way that makes the subject of the image more visually striking. The dark light also implies that the person may have been attempting to hide his injuries, as is a common occurrence within this theme. I wanted to look to better represent the emotional implications of injury through this.

I used a black and white filter in this image in a way that works with the lighting and background to highlight the injuries on the persons' face. The filter also allows the depth of the scar to be more prominent and seem more realistic. The simple contrast in dark and light colours allow for a more interesting image as a result. Tone is clearly an important element within the image. I have used it as a way of showing things that have come to light that were previously being hidden away. I used a black and white filter to better show the tone. The dark colour tones also reflect the dark subject matter.

Progression:

If I were to do this again, I would look to incorporate other forms of injury into the images. I could use photoshop to create cuts and scars but I would probably look to use make up and practical effects. I would like to also use bandages with the image. For my next shoot I would like to look at evidence of movement. I will show this through the use of a photomontage.

Shoot 7 Work Diary

Today I focused on working in the studio in order to gain some detailed portrait photographs of a number of people. I then took the images that and edited them in photoshop. My idea was to age each person dramatically and compare the difference in appearance. I did this in order  to demonstrate the evidence of ageing within the images.

I chose this image because it shows a moderate example of ageing where I have decided only to age the person slightly in order make the image look more convincing. The image shows contrast of old and young with other contrasts of dark and light colours. The light in the image is used to further highlight the difference in age. This reveals more of the wrinkles and other age defining features. The change in skin tone from dark to pale shows how the person has become more withered as they became older.

This image shows a more extreme example of ageing. I have managed to age the person considerably so there is more of a visually striking example of contrast. Form is used in the image to highlight the more extreme examples of ageing such as the wrinkles and sagging skin. Tone is a significant part of making the person seem older. The image slowly begins to get darker as he gets older suggesting that he is losing his purity and is becoming more withered as he grows older.

Progression:

I was able to successfully utilise photoshop while showing evidence of age. I would like to find different ways of showing the contrast in age. I could achieve this by showing two different portrait pictures side-by-side. For my next shoot I would like to use similar techniques to show evidence of injury through cuts and bruises.

Shoot 6 Work Diary

Today I went out looking to focus on evidence of ageing in the environment. I initially set out with the aim of photographing abandoned buildings. As the shoot carried on I was able to show evidence while showing it with a mix of plant life and urban environments. I was able to get a good amount of pictures that show a good amount of variation.

I chose this picture because it shows in great detail how moss has grown on the bricks over time. The picture shows contrast between plant life and urban areas causing the picture to appear more eye catching. There are contrasts between the different colours used within the image. The green within the image suggest connotations of health and nature while the brown colours of the brickwork suggest dull tones. There is a pattern within the plantlike as lines are formed as a result of the plantlike growing out of the brick.

This picture shows evidence of how the structure has aged judging from the faded and chipped paint and broken locks. The picture also shows some evidence of abandonment as the doors have been busted open. The picture shows elements of pattern between the three blue doors. A clear example of contrast can be seen within the image. The door on the far left remains open, creating a dark black colour. This is interesting as it shows that the place is abandoned and it also causes the audience to question what is inside the building out of curiosity.

Progression:

In my next shoot I would like to look at this topic again while using other methods such as multiple imagery to create an interesting image. For my next shoot I would like to show ageing of people. I can accomplish this by photos photoshopping an image in order to make them look older.

Shoot 5 Work Diary

Today I went out with the goal of photographing evidence of ageing and growth in nature. I was successful in this aspect as I was able to take a variety of photos that reflected these themes in different ways. Towards the end of my shoot I began to find it difficult to find new ways in which I can show evidence in nature.

I chose this picture because it shows both evidence of growth and ageing. The picture is full of trees that have been growing over time. The light in the image allows the texture of the tree to be seen, showing the cracking bark that has come with age. Contrast can be seen within the image as the pathway that has been formed over years of movement through the forest, cuts through the environment. The trees form patterns throughout the entire image. This allows for depth to be given to the image, as the trees begin to change over different distances.

This image focuses on the very top of the tree line and shows evidence of the height that the trees have grown to. The dark colours of the trees act in contrast to the bright blue sky in a way that creates a visually striking image. The contrast of the trees against the sky almost cause them to appear as silhouettes within the image. This causes the image to be more bold as a result due to all of the bold colours used as a result.

Progression:

In my next shoot I would like to show evidence of ageing and time passing in a way that incorporates both urban and natural areas. I can achieve this by focusing on abandoned buildings.

Work Diary Shoot 4

In todays shoot I went out with the intention of focusing on reflecting evidence through tracks and growth in my images. I was very successful and was able to find many examples of tracks from people and cars. I was able to find more examples of evidence in graffiti and litter during the shoot.

I chose this image because it shows evidence of tracks. The image uses a contrast of black and white in the image in order to make the image more striking. We can see that the water on the form shows that a person had previously walked in from the rain and under shelter. The light being shone across the surface of the floor creates the effect of form, by enhancing the shadows. By enhancing the shadows, the detail of the texture is enhanced. The black and white filter helps to enhance some of the detail within the image as well as the contrast among other formal elements.

I chose this image because it shows an example of evidence in the form of a tire track. This image shows how a car has drove through the wet mud and has created a pattern in the dirt. The texture of the mud is emphasised in a way that allows audiences to realise that the tracks have come from a tire. Another formal element featured within this image is contrast. The colour of the green grass acts in contrast with the colour of the mud. This shows further elements that the grass has been drove over by a car, causing the contrast to appear.

Progression:

In my other shoots I would like to focus on one topic. I would like to explore evidence in nature and growth. I believe I could show this through a focus on plantlife and contrasts or urban areas and nature.

Shoot 3 Work Diary

Today I went out with the intention of shooting different genres of evidence such as graffiti and vandalism as my last shoot was lacking within this are. I was able to achieve my goal and searched all around for examples of graffiti within the environment. I also wanted to incorporate more formal elements within my images. I chose to focus my images on formal elements such as texture, contrast and pattern. I was successful in incorporating these themes into the images.

This image shows an example of evidence with graffiti. I decided to take advantage of the focus in order to exaggerate the detail of the photo to show the texture of the railing while blurring out the background. The white background acts in contrast with the black writing in order to create a striking image.  Another formal element that is apparent within this image is texture. The light being shone across the railing causes the texture of the bar to be revealed. The texture of the paint appears to be bumpy as a result.

This image shows another example of evidence with graffiti.  This image features two main formal elements, pattern, lines and contrast. The lines of the metal door appear to form together in a pattern formation. The black, matte writing of the spray paint clashes with the metallic surface of the door. This creates a contrast which causes the message to stand out against the door. The texture of the surface can also be seen. The rust is present on the door which implies that the door has been there for a while and has been rained on in the past.

Progression:

For my next shoot I would like to continue to explore the uses of formal elements within my images. I would like to explore more elements such as colour, tone and depth. I would like to photograph other examples of evidence. For my next shoot I would like to photograph tracks in order to show evidence of people and cars being there.

Shoot 2 Work Diary

Today I was looking to improve upon some of the areas that I was not confident with in my last shoot. I went out to shoot evidence again and decided to be more reserved with the amount of pictures that I was taking, opting for more quality over quantity. I focused on my inspiration that I had researched before the shoot and tried to refer back to the tones and types of evidence as much as possible.

I chose this picture because it shows a clear example of evidence of people who had previously been smoking in the environment. This image also uses the focus on the camera to show depth on a small scale.  Contrasts in colour are a key theme within this image. The cigarettes stand out from the metal bin, while the black scorch marks are highlighted around the bin. This implies that people have previously used the bin to extinguish their cigarettes while leaving the remains on the bin. It is also clear that the square on top of then was used as an ash tray.

I chose this image because it shows a half empty wine glass that has ben placed there by a person who had been previously drinking it. The image focuses on the wine glass and shows a clear representation of contrast of the bright yellow liquid against the dark backdrop. The image is framed on a stair case and shows the pattern within the railings on the stairs. Formal elements such as lines, pattern and depth can be seen within the image. The bars of the stairs form lines which create patterns. The way that these patterns change over distances create depth within the image.

Progression:

I was able to achieve my aims for improving the areas in which my work suffered from in the last shoot. To improve my work I will look to focus on keeping this consistent style of work while trying to increase the quantity of photos that I take. I would also like to set up some of my own examples of evidence for my shoots. I could benefit from this by having a running theme throughout my images while having a higher quantity. For a theme I will try experimenting with other examples of evidence within my next shoot such as graffiti and vandalism. I would also like to incorporate the formal elements in my next shoot. For my next shoot I would like to photograph graffiti in order to show vandalism.

Initial Response Work Diary

Today I was set with the task of photographing evidence outside. At first this seemed to be a difficult task as it was hard to find any type of evidence of people being within the environment. It was only when I began to stage some scenes that I was able to show evidence and achieve the images that I wanted. This initial shoot has given me ideas on how I can improve the quality of my work while focusing more on the subject that I have been tasked with capturing.

I decided to use this picture because it shows a clear example of evidence. The use of the washing up liquid in the sink allows audiences to realise that someone was here before. The bright green colour of the washing liquid acts in contrast to the shiny, metallic surface of the sink. The soapy liquid can be used in order to show the depth of the image on a small scale by showing how it trails all along the sink. The green colour suggests connotations to cleanliness and health against a metallic background.

I used this picture because I tried to replicate some of the themes that would be present within a crime scene. The bright red is used in a way that looks like blood splatter on the wall. Contrast is the main formal element within this image. The bright red acts in contrast of the white wall, causing the colour to stand out as a result. Another formal element seen within the image is texture. The light shinning across the surface highlights the texture of the image. This reveals that the wall is rough and bumpy, but the red mark on the wall is made up of a granulated powder, maybe from an acrylic paint mixture.

Progression:

In order to progress my work I need to try to show evidence in more clearer ways. I believe I can accomplish this better by shooting in the studio and staging some scenes that I can photograph. I would like to stick to the theme of crime and I can do this by researching more ways in which the police document crime scenes. I would like to show evidence of human interaction in my next shoot. I can do this by showing objects and rubbish that has been placed in the environment by a person.
